Is Jerry Rice the greatest PLAYER ever?
I was just looking at his stats, and i am amazed beyond belief of what the guy has accomplished.
Career Receptions- 1,549 next best- Marvin Harrison 1,102
Career TDs- 207 next best-Emmit Smith 175
75 receiving yards per game, and thats including his last couple of years when he wasn't that effective.
He had a 22 TD season in 12 games. Another year he averaged 115 receiving yards per game. He is obviously the best WR in history so far(Randy Moss may come up in later year discussions,) but is he also the best player? If not, then who would you say?

He definitely gets strong consideration for it, there's no question about it. Undeniably he's the best wide receiver of all time. But for me, the greatest football PLAYER of all time is more of a throwback player to me. This last 2 generations of football players have gotten too specific and minimize the role a player can have. For me, it's someone who played multiple positions, and exceeded at every single one.
The guy I'm talking about? Sammy Baugh. I could tell you all the accomplishments of him, but just browse through his biography, and you'll see why he gets my vote.

Jerry Rice was truly one of the greatest, but alot of ppl forget about how good Packers WR Don Hutson was
-He played with GB from 1935-1945 & amassed 488 catches, 7,991 yds & 99 receiving TDs
-He was the 1st player in NFL history to score 100 total TDs
-In 1942 he had 74 catches, 1,211 yds & 17 TDs. In 1942!! Even by today's standards those are amazing stats
-During the span of his career, he scored 99 receiving TDs. The next best player had 33 receiving TDs. Just ridiculous
-Hutson also was the Packers extra point kicker, & he played safety too. He led the NFL in INTs in 1940, & had 30 INTs over the last 6 seasons of his career. That would be like Jerry Rice catching a 60 yd TD pass, kicking the extra point, then lineing up at safety delivering hits & getting INTs
IMO, no one dominated more than Don Hutson did in his time, & he definitley deserves to be one of the top, if not the best, player in NFL history

It kills me that people mention Moss when he's only had like 2 or 3 good seasons. He's not even a complete reciever; only a deep ball threat. TO has a wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better chance of catching Jerry Rice and he won't even do it. Jerry Rice is the greatest placyer and Lawrence Taylor is the most dominate. Man some people on here has terrible football incite. Moss hasn't really done anything in his 12 year career; even when he had a healthy Culpepper. Only his rookie year and his 07 year with the Pats other than that what has he really done? He doesn't run routes. Isn't good without the ball. Won't block for other team mates. And he plays when he wants too. To be great you have to put it on the line everytime you go out there.

Greatest Wide Receiver, yes. Player? No.
1- A Wide Receiver is not as valuable as a QB or RB offensively.
2- He played 20 years which inflated his numbers a bit (just like Emmit Smith who inflated his numbers as well, he should have retired with Dallas).
3- I don't think there is a "greatest player" ever in Football and if there was he would be a QB.

i'm a Niner fan as properly, yet how problematic is it to be the excellent with youthful and Montana as your QB's, the two superb statistical quarterbacks of their time? He extremely stored himself healthful and this helped his stats out, yet some great athletes had their profession decrease short, so we'd never be attentive to how stable that they had be. My %. could be Bo Jackson, because of the fact via himself, he ought to alter a sport. Jerry, like each wideouts, are based on the equipment they're in. In Bo's 4 years, he averaged 5.4 yards in step with carry. this is a well-known down each 2 contains. And it did no longer rely what the offense became into working - he ought to improvise like no different. i think of Jerry did all the properly suited issues and if information is your in common terms diploma, than you have the excellent WR, yet i think of Emmitt Smith and Dan Marino might additionally be judged because of the fact the excellent as properly. in case you utilize skill, which has no purpose properly-known, i could throw Gale Sayers into the blend. So, this isn't any longer an difficulty-free question and there is no common solutions.

Rice was good, but the Fun Bunch was more entertaining. (Just to refresh your memory as a fellow Redskins fan: Art Monk, Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders)

yes, I think he is the best ever.
Tito, you are smoking something if you think Randy Moss is going to break all of Rice's records. He got 1, but I just don't see him getting any more.

Since it's hard to compare apples with oranges, let's leave it at saying that he's the greatest receiver ever.
