Windows7 wants to install XP service pack?
We have just got a new laptop with Windows 7 as operating system but when I checked the updates section for Windows, it wants to install Windows XP service pack 3! Why?
Should I ignore it? or install it to make it go away? Can it do any harm installing this onto Windows 7? Please explain why you are giving that answer in relatively simple terms as although reasonably computer literate I am a chemist rather than computer enthusiast.

To Tom M who claims to not believe me. Can I suggest you look at my profile and level achievement? I'm not here to waste anyone's time with inane stuff. I couldn't believe this coming up on a new Acer Aspire laptop received at Christmas... that is why I queried it. and asked for help. Having been with Windows since Windows 3.1 I couldn't understand it either. That is why I'm asking for help from those whose computer knowledge is better than mine!

I would suggest that you do NOT install WinXP SP3. Especially if you are running Windows 7. A spec sheet of your system would be helpful, but regardless, Win7 should not in any retrospect be requesting to install any service pack for WinXP.
The reason why I would not apply that patch is simply because Windows XP and Windows 7 are two totally different technologies. Applying a WinXP patch to Win7 would update drivers and crucial Windows files and would basically corrupt Win7. Just to name a few changes would be DirectX, Win Drivers, System32, and potentially Registry values.
I highly advise against applying the patch. Right-Click on the patch and hide the update, then it won't keep nagging you.

windows 7 and xp service pace 3 is totally difrent version. so i think it can not be happened
