why my gold fish just bought from walmart died after few hours?

I just bought some gold fishes and a Koi fish from Wal-mart and 3 of them including the Koi died after 30 mins when i reached my home. I put the rest of them into the tank which had water already but 30 mins 2 of them were dead. Those alive fishes keep lying down on the bottom of the tank although they were the strongest and still swam when other died. Please help me to figure out what happened. I feel so sorry that I bought them because i don't want to see them keep dying.

Your water might have been off. A lot of pet stores can test your water for you if you bring a sample in, or you could by a little test thing yourself.

Your tank might have too much ammonia in it.

Few possible reasons. First off, Walmart fish are notoriously unhealthy. Stress of any kind can kill an already sick fish. Goldfish are especially susceptible to many diseases, so you want to be careful with that. I would recommend never buying from Walmart. A couple things you may be able to work with. First, is this an established tank, or starting anew? If it is new, then you have to deal with the nitrogen cycle. There's plenty of information available online about that. The other concern with new tanks is what sort of water you put in. If you simply filled it with tap water untreated, then that probably contributed to their death. Tap water contains chlorine, which is toxic to fish. Additionally, how big is this tank? Koi can get really big, and simply cannot live most of the time in a tank below 150 gallons. Few people try that anyway, as koi are more suitable for ponds. You probably should avoid koi altogether. There are plenty of starting guides to aquariums you should look into. Don't start trying to raise fish blindly.

For them to die that quickly, something is badly wrong with your tank water.

First thing - did you use water conditioner? Tap water usually contains chlorine or chloramine, it's put there to KILL anything that may be living in the water, and it works quite well. You can buy water conditioner that will neutralise it. Most likely cause.

2nd. Dont buy Koi for an aquarium. They grow into a freaking huge 2 or 3 ft fish, could outlive YOU, and need a large pond. Keeping a stunted one alive for a few years in a tank is a fail, they should live 40-70 years, and some have made 200 years. But that's not why they died, thats why they were going to die next year.

3rd Learn about the nitrogen cycle. You must get that running in the tank before it's safe for fish. Either by starting out with just a few small fish, and letting things settle down, or doing a full fishless cycle. http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm

But again, that's not why your fish died, that's why they were going to die next week, once the waste ammonia in the water has time to build up.

4th, tank size? Is the tank big enough for goldfish. If you have normal comet goldfish you will want about 50gal minimum for an adult size one, and 20gal extra for every other fish. You could start them out in a smaller tank to start with, but long term, thats how big they should get.

And Finally - Walmart has a notoriously bad reputation for the quality of the fish, and the care they give them.

did you add in any drop like tap water conditioner??? it may be because you didnt add in any tap water conditioner and the water from the sink is not tap water...

    or

it can be that it was sick or something....most of the walmart fishes are sick and has disease...and they dont take care of the fishes there...

    or

it may cause because of when you were walking out of walmart you didnt raise up the fish bag up high...they have some kind of thing that will kill your fish if you go through the thingy...always have to raise the bag up high..

well sorry for your lost...also hope you had a big tank because goldfish needs a tank around 30 or more gallon because they grow very big...

and when choosing a fish without dying, make sure that it is active, it flares very nice and stuff...dont get one that is staying still, no matter how good it looks it will die pretty soon...

well take it back and get your money back and go to petsmart or petco they have some nice ones..

Couple strategies in this... first of all, i could wager that your tank is tormented by New Tank Syndrome. New fish tanks could wade via a technique to construct up the useful bacteria they could neutralize the waste from the fish. This technique, talked approximately as cycling, can take in to 6 weeks. in the time of the approach, the tanks water will grow to be poisonous to the fish is you do not shop up with water modifications. In a 10 gallon i could propose which you hazard 2-3 gallons a pair circumstances each week. This technique is going to be worse with goldfish. Goldfish are fantastically grimy thus far as fish go. truly a 10 gallon is only too small for goldfish. i could advise some beginner tropicals as a substitute. AND, as a results of fact it truly is a sparkling tank, inventory it very gently. Overfeeding additionally will kill your fish, fairly interior the cycling era. i could reccomend feeding them once or twice each week right this moment. only be sure you're treating your water once you top off the tank. faucet water includes chlormaine and chlorine which will reason you fish to die. elementary plan, shop the fish numbers low for a 10 gallon, do not over feed and shop up on water modifications.

I bought 6 fish from Walmart. Before I even got them home, four died in the bag. I brought them back to the store, and was told I have to lift the bag above the metal detectors(or my head) upon leaving the store, because the detectors kill them. You think she would have told me that when she was putting them in the fish bag.

you got it from walmart, theres your problem, although I have 7 goldfish, 2 black moores, and a bristlenose pleco, and bought all of them except the pleco from walmart, 5 of the goldfish were feeder fish that that have grown quite big and so far ive had them for a few years, and 2 of them I bought bigger more expensive ones and ive had them for about a year or 2 , while the black moores ive had for 6 months or so

Its probably not your fault. Fish from walmart are taken care of very poorly. You might want to take them back and get your money or new fish.

Goldfish brought cheaply are very unlikely to live for long, it all depends on how healthy they are, and how much you pay for them. it's like when you get a goldfish from a carnival its bound to not last long. Just pay out a little bit more for a good fish. I had a fish for about 7 years nearly.
