Please tell me if you think?

Please tell me if you think?

some important female scientists / mathematicians / inventors are not given mention in didactic books, but should? I really think it's unfair to systematically exclude females from books students see, because a lot of people seem to look no further than them, making them think women never did anything (as if women's traditional role was nothing, hpf, why don't they try to keep a house and raise the family?).

I don't think there's any reason to not mention: Hypatia of Alexandria, Maria Gaetana Agnesi, Sophie Germain, Maria Montessori and Emmy Noether. What about you?

Note: For those who have been deprived of sleep or have an IQ lower than most, please read the thing as many times as you need, but don't post ****. :) Thank you.

Captain: have you read any of their works?

Interesting, Jessica. Are there any others you feel are wrongly excluded? Doesn't have to be just women, it can be black people too.

Well....If you get into higher education (these days), you will actually learn about these women. Men do tend to decide who is the most important and they tend to choose men, and then it's perpetuated. It's a snowball effect at that point, and then because so and so was seen as more important, he became more widely taught, and then became more influential, and therefore became more widely taught.

And on, and on, and on.....

    This is changing rapidly though.

I bought Uncle Tom's Cabin a few months ago, and in the preface it talked about how, even though this book was considered the most influential booth of the 19th century, it wasn't read in schools much because it was deemed "womanly and popular" and not "real literature." "Real literature" was Hemingway and other manly men - not common womanly stuff that everyone read. It was very interesting.

Anyway, as I said, that's changing.

Many people are excluded from citing in books in past, not just women. We learned in Canadian History how Francoire was cheated of recognition for the mapping of Canada, and how Gabrielle was not cited for his contributions to the hibernating patterns of beavers.
