Money - USD not widely acceptable. Businesses need government approval to accept USD. All travellers are required to change USD into FEC ( Foreign Exchange Currency ). 1 FEC is usually equivalent to 1 USD. FEC is usually used to pay for hotels or some high end establishments like restaurants , clubs because the some of the prices are quoted in USD (FEC). FEC is not practical to be used on the street because people quote you prices in their local currency which is Kyat and it would be difficult to convert Kyat to the equivalent of FEC. Therefore change your FEC to Kyat at money changer. SIM is not a big problem, you may buy one there and use to make international calls.
As you know Myanmar is a poor 3rd world countries therefore do expect the place to be not hygienic and the health care system is not that good. Please take appropriate action like vaccinations, medications etc to prevent malaria ( common ), dengue, hepatitis. Always drink boiled or bottled waters. When you dine, just take a polite look at the kitchen to see if it's clean. Avoid buying pre-cooked street food.
Last but not least, do not talk anything negative about the government. Even locals are afraid to talk about this topic in public like restaurants because there are always "government spies" around watching / hearing them. Most complained about the government only in their homes or places that they are sure nobody is spying on them.
Myanmar people are nice and polite people. Do respect them and their culture and customs and you will be rewarded with a welcoming smile.
