Is Taiwan independence a bad idear?
I think unify the Island with mainland doesnt make China much stronger,so why not let it goes? as long as Taiwanese gov does not side with Japan or America against China, then having a Chinese speaking country is not that bad. just look at Austria a German speaking country stay neutural but very lose tie with big brother Germany. Beijing can give Taiwan its sovereignty with a condition that TW can not let other country establish a military base in TW,also can not side with other countries engage war against China,a peace treaty or something

It isnt a bad idea,but I betcha Taiwan will 'invite' the Americans to come and build a military base in the island to 'balance' the region or 'protect' TW from China,blah,blah...so why not enjoying a highly automous status as HongKong while still maintaining everthings as it now in Taiwan instaed?

What is the best thing for the citizens of Taiwan?
If Taiwan were completely independent and isolated from mainland China, then they would be all alone against Japan over the current island dispute. And, as a result the islands would be Japanese territory. But the mainland has been supporting the Taiwan stance that the disputed islands belong to Taiwan. Because of this, it is the Taiwan businessmen and developers who are benefiting from the support of mainland China.
In general, I (personally) believe, that individual nations and states should operate independently from collections and associations with groups. Such as the EU, and the USA. But I do not know how practical this thought is.
The Philippines had an opportunity to become a USA state, and chose to be independent. Was it a good idea? I think so, but there are those who would disagree with me. Puerto Rico voted on the application for statehood to the USA, and maybe some day they will be a state of the USA. Is this a good idea? I don't think so.
In both cases, my opinions are firm, but are also irrelevant. I simply do not reside in those places.
What is best for Taiwan citizens depends on the person. In many cases, there are many factors that are involved and are seemingly too convoluted for non-residents to understand.

Taiwan (Republic of China) is constantly independent, and Taiwan in no way being managed by means of Communistic celebration. The government of Mainland China which is led with the aid of communistic party desires to expand their territory, that is why they at all times declare Taiwan belongs to them ,this motion identical to N.Korea normally says S.Korea is false one. In case you do research , then in finding one which without bias you may to find that: No treaty can prove the announcing of Mainland China (PRC). So, there's no bad inspiration in actual world. But there may be bully-obstacle from Mainland China.

I don't think it is a bad idea. Your suggestion has merit.
Taiwan already functions as a de facto independent country under the ROC government.
Anything less free than the status quo would be going in the wrong direction.
Taiwan (ROC) has been a de facto independent country for decades, and no amount of bribery, coercion, or threats from Mainland China (nor the opinions of other countries in whose political affairs they have meddled) can change the pride the Taiwanese have in creating a prosperous and independent home for themselves.
The "There is only One China, and it all belongs to the one-party, CCP-ruled PRC, which can lay claim to anything it wants under threat of military incursion" policy is ridiculous and insulting. I don't know how the PRC stays on the UN Security Council, a global peacekeeping entity of 200+ nations, when they have never agreed to sign and uphold the Terms of the UN Charter, and have issued a de facto "Declaration of War" against the the Taiwanese and their government in the form of the PRC's "Anti-secession Law - Article Eight".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Secession_Law
To wit, there exist:
North Korea and South Korea;
Northern and Southern Ireland;
Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, etc; all former parts of French Indo-China;
Sudan and South Sudan;
Australia and New Zealand, former British Colonies;
East Timor and Indonesia;
Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, et al; former Spanish colonies in South/Central America;
The USA, Canada, and England;
Ukraine, Belarus, et al; former constituents of the Soviet Union;
...and the list goes on.
So, why does the PRC wish to fight against a long-term worldwide trend to let a People rule themselves under the form of government they prefer? It seems not only foolish to attempt such, but also extremely imperialistic, aggressive, and far outdated in its militaristic mindset.

@Fizzle - Leave it alone, and let it be a neutral country! <an audience of 23 million people offers you a standing ovation and hearty applause!>
@kv - Sensible answer in many ways; but how does one stop imperialism when a humongous bully has no concern for international borders and views "cooperation" as simply a temporary setback on the way to taking everything from the peaceful ones so as to corrupt and destroy it? Long ago, I asked "What has the PRC done to help others?" The question was attacked and deleted before this answer ever appeared: http://eng.mod.gov.cn/SpecialReports/2009hjdjhd/in...
Was this action valid and a means to achieve liberties in sailing the South China Sea as "protectors of OTHERS", or just a ruse designed to justify taking what they want from others? Frankly, I don't think anyone wants corrupt "policemen" running around free doing this:
(Các) Nguồn: It's been figured out decades ago, but the CCP-led Chinese are EXTREMELY SLOW LEARNERS, and they (along with the Bush-based oilmen who start wars) are bent on dragging everyone back into the abyss: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9poCAuYT-s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX7V6FAoTLc "Never take away the chance for someone to become a better person. It might be the last time they earnestly try to do so." HOWEVER, some are not even trying to do so... Are they? It is interesting to note that most of the well honored people in human history are those who tossed aside the "riches and power" they could have enjoyed, soley in an effort to pursue something of a more noble nature. Yet, the CCP leadership continues to turn its deaf ear to them, and persecute, imprison, and torture any such persons they find. I am saddened that China is led by such criminally-minded people with no true sense compassion left in their black hearts. - Your friend, Diogenes. - Ẩn danh8 năm trước
I´ll look at the issue from another perspective, it just doesn´t make sense for a cruel, inhuman regime to force FREE, totally different people to go under the regime. Tibet, Xinjiang for instance are totally different races and religions from the Beijing Chinese, CCP´s using iron fists and guns to hold them under Beijing is what led to today´s grievances in those places.
The problem with CCP is mafia gangsters lack the skill nor know-how to truly win PEOPLE´s heart, all they have been doing in the last 63 years is by force and oppression to make PEOPLE obedient. They are reaping what they have sown from the hundreds of riots going on all over China on a daily basis. It´s no use to say Tibet, Xinjiang, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau.....have been a part of China since xxxx but then the PEOPLE from those places do NOT feel the same as CCP/Beijing.

It's a shame it can't simply be a neutral country but I doubt the Chinese would leave it alone. It's been ruled by the Dutch, the Spanish, The Chinese, the Japanese, then Chinese fleeing communism...isn't it about time to leave it the hell alone? You aren't talking about "reunification" with mainland China because by now they have little in common. You're justifying Chinese imperialism in order to placate the Chinese. It makes as much sense as reunifying North and South Korea under North Korean rule.

Taiwan (being a part of China) should get independence right _after_ Texas becomes independent
