Where can I get information about transporting pet dogs across the country.?
We'll be going from San Diego to Connecticut. One dog weighs 18 lbs and the other weight 14 lbs, but they're about 14 inches tall so they won't fit under the seat of an airplane.

There are dozens of companies that now offer safe pet transportation for those who fear the horror stories of animals who have died or had serious trauma from being transported in airline cargo holds.
I know thousand of animals travel that way without apparent damage but thete are still risks and each year there are dogs that suffer harm
I would never ship my pets via cargo. I know dogs that died that way.
Sorry to say I do not have a recommendation on which transport service to use but among people who show dogs or compete in national obedience trials may be a good place to find out which companies have the best reputation and track record for safety.
Use a search engine for " safe pet transportation across country" and many company names appear then begin to research their customer base for testimonials if possible and perhaps seek veterinarian opinion from their locales.
I would contact a local kennel club for advice from people who likely transport animals (though many are transported by their professional handlers) as they may have specific companies in mind
The following is one of the companies that appeared during a search. Good luck

Birdbrain (killer name, dude), Delta dash (as opposed to regular cargo) is for dog + crate weighing under 100lbs. Check in at cargo is only 1 hour minimum instead of 2. Layovers are minimum 1 hour instead of 2. The shipment must be pre-paid, where as regular cargo can be sent "collect". Health certificate is still required. Cost is $40-$100 more than regular cargo. The nice thing about Delta is from Sept 15 to May15, you can check the dog as baggage for $250 and no health certificate required.
American is cargo only...but low rates. United is expensive, but depending on your departing and arriving cities, has some decent flight times. The down side....US AIR operates a lot of their flights and does not take dogs at all. This is supposedly changing (very slowly) because of the partnership with American. Some of the bargain airlines also take dogs....Jetblue I think. I had to use one of them several years back to arrange delivery of a client dog from Ca to FL. For the most part, I stick with Delta. Almost all of their airports are no on the Summer Pet Program, which means no temp restrictions during the summer. A few of the large airports are NOT on the program yet. Denver for 1, which has caused me several problems.

I travel extensively with my dogs both cross country and internationally and my preference is Delta Dash (They may have changed name to Delta Pet First..)
You must first make sure the dogs are very comfortable in the - correctly sized - carrier. Take them on trips in the car to get used to movement and new sounds. Start with a ride around the block and increase the time spent in the carrier (or "crate") Make certain you use airline approved crates of hard plastic w/ a metal door and holes on three sides for proper air circulation - top must be solid for airline approval.
On day of travel make certain to zip tie the crate as the plastic nuts that hold the crate together can fail with devestaing results. Don't feed/water 4-6 hrs before drop off and be sure to not put anything but the dog wearing a flat buckle collar on in the crate to ensure they wot get hung as w/ a choke collar. Put contact info everywhere and try not to be nervous - most of times this is very uneventful.
Good luck:)

Each airline will have their own costs and requirements. You will need an airline approved plastic crate, your dogs will need to be current on their vaccines, and most airlines will require a recent health certificate from your vet. There may be temperature/seasonal restrictions. The specific airline you're using can fill you in on their particular policies if you phone.

If you are flying them, the airlines have websites with this information. don't think any dogs can go on trains except Service Dogs. If you have a large vehicle, you could drive with them across country.

From your local veterinary center. It's a stressful time for an animal when traveling, especially because they will be separated from you the whole time.
Your vets will know all of the up-to-date details and should be able to help you with booking your dog on a flight e.t.c.

Call the airline you will fly and ask them about sending them in cargo, just like thousands of dogs fly across the world daily, simple.

The best think i would suggest is searching it up on google and when you find the right company contact them by email/phone and tell them what would be the cost if your not happy they could give you links to other companys in that trade
