I assume that you mean a particular sect called "Pilgrims". The word "pilgrim" means a person who has gone on a long journey to a religious shrine, as part of his or her religious devotions.

In medieval times, pilgrims of many origins could be seen "on pilgrimage" in many parts of Europe.

The word "Puritan" meant different things to different people in different parts of Christianity at different times in history, thus it needs qualification in a question such as yours, especially if you are calling for "solid evidence".

And what do you mean by "more religious"? That expression could be interpreted in many different ways.
