Breathing while using abs in samba?

I've been trying to push more ab movement in my samba when I noticed that I may have a breathing issue as much as a habit of movement issue.

Mainly, I can't seem to breath and use my abs in certain basic movements when I do samba. This means that I either:

- breathe smoothly, but omit ab movement

- use more ab movement, but breathe in a rather stop-and-go fashion. This usually means that I look better, but slowly fall behind until I completely run out of breath after about a minute and 20 seconds of dancing.

I asked my instructor and he oh-so-helpfully said, "you just need to learn to breath with your dancing"

I tried, but I seem to be using the same muscle for breathing and for SOME parts of the the movement. Someone suggested breathing shallow, but I still seem stuck with small blocks of not breathing.

Anyone else have and make progress on this problem?

    It is normal. Picture your dancing turning into running, you would be tired and out of breath after a while right? Well a good way to improve your breath capacity and make your dancing last longer in between breaks is to breathe in on two counts and breathe out on 16 counts like you are breathing through a straw (or whistling, just make a small space for the air to come in and out), repeat this a few times everyday and increase the counts breathing out every time you get comfortable with it. It works best to do it in the morning when you wake up and are well rested from sleeping. Eventually your body will get very used to breathing deeply and you will be able to dance longer with fewer breathing breaks.
