Modding in Minecraft?

Question

I'm using MCPatcher to mod my game (finding the .zip and adding all files that show up after I pick it, I think that's how I mod it.) 

I have (I think) modded ModLoader first on it, and I've tried to mod JourneyMap for MC 1.5.1 on my Minecraft 1.5. Is it important that I find a JourneyMap for 1.5? I've been looking and can't find one...

If you're going to install a mod that's meant for Minecraft 1.5.1 you should be using that version of Minecraft. It might work with 1.5, because of the small changes made during the coding of 1.5 and 1.5.1

I am a mod developer myself and my code for 1.4.6 is nearly compatible with 1.5.1, all that Mojang changes is the naming of parameters and sometimes adding/changing methods. So as I said the mod you're talking about might be compatible with 1.5
